When it comes to the end-of-the-year celebration, there is one thing we all have in common. No matter where you may be, many of us have new intentions and goals for the incoming new year.
This standard practice we all share is part of the ritual for a new opportunity we see over the horizon to adjust our lives towards a better life design that fits our dream life. What is interesting to me, is to observe that year after year, people keep getting excited, taking the first step to create change in their lives, but after the celebrations, most people keep the commitment to those goals and intentions only for a couple of weeks. And as time passes by, that commitment melts down like ice cream under 40 degrees; resulting in giving up on those plans and goals till the next year. Sounds familiar, right?
Before sharing the secret to stopping the vicious cycle and finally keeping on track with your goals for 2023 (the ones you have promised for a while with no results, ouch!), I want to tell you the reason for this non-stop sabotage.
In my personal experience and my professional background as a healing & life design transformation mentor, I can say for certain that the first step doesn't start with promising you will start at 5 am in the morning to meditate, work out, or keep track of every calorie you eat to lose weight. The first step is to understand the root behind these questions:
Why do you keep sabotaging yourself?
What is the subconscious behavior blocking your way to success?
Designing new habits, routines, and a new lifestyle isn't just about promises, journaling your desires, and punishing yourself every time you go rogue. It is about discovering your beliefs and emotional bonds behind the sabotage, erasing them, and building new habits over time in a way that feels natural and easy to you (to learn more about how this works grab a free copy of my E-BOOK HEAL & DESIGN YOUR LIFE).
The secret behind creating and keeping new habits to create a new lifestyle is to wipe out the previous base you have in your system (the old ways of doing it mentally & emotionally) and build new ones over time with consistency and easiness. New habits or routines are adopted in our lives when subconsciously they become part of our way of living. When they feel natural to us.
This process requires deep work, wiping out the old patterns and consistency in your mental & emotional bodies followed by your physical body. Not the other way around.
So, how you can do this?
HERE IS MY 3 STEP TO CREATE AND KEEP NEW HABITS AND GOALS:
1. Understand the mental and emotional root that sabotages your plan. For example, you may want to create healthier habits like eating better, exercising, and quitting addictions such as cigarettes or alcohol, but you find it difficult to get a good relationship with food, you never have time to follow an exercise plan with consistency and feel attached to the need of smoke in order to survive your stressful life.
The root of those problems normally is the need of relieving emotional pain, discomfort, or mental distress. Unhealthy food, alcohol, and cigarette then become the ´patches´ that give you comfort. Then, in order to not acknowledge these like a short-term pill by default, you create a relationship of pleasure with these habits, knowing deep down that they aren't in your best interest, but subconsciously using them to distract and mesmerize the real issue inside (that's exactly why it is so hard to let them go, it is a love and hate relationship ).
Bad eating habits = poor relationship with your bodily and emotional wounds unresolved from past experiences or childhood
Lack of discipline to work out = procrastination/fear of being seen/low self-esteem
Addictions such as drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes = attachment to past wounds/emotional and mental stress/fear and avoidance to feel emotions/escapism from reality/relief from past wounds
*Important notes:
These steps apply to any habit or goal you may want to create in your life. You can use them as a follow-up to build and keep new habits as part of your lifestyle. Although it is important to remember that every case is unique and personal, it depends on the baggage you hold and your life story, understanding this is a crucial part of succeeding with this process. If you are having trouble pointing out this part, you can book a personal session with me to find specific answers and guidance to your unique case.
2. Once you understand the root of your own sabotage, a process of healing based on subconscious reprogramming and emotional bonding is required. Tools such as EFT (emotional freedom technique) are practical and proven to work (learn how to use EFT here).
Another option is using affirmations, but they will need some extra support from an emotional release technique like breathing techniques or dancing. This is the reason why EFT is still my fav!
3. Building the new base is the part where your new goals (habits) are going to become part of your new lifestyle. The way I recommend doing this is: slowly, with consistency. It is better to meditate for 10 min a day every day, building up the routine than to meditate for 30 min every now and then!
In this part of the process, it is important to find your own way. As I mentioned before, every case is unique and personal. What works for you may not work for me, meaning you need to be open to exploring diverse possibilities till you find your own. PATIENCE WILL BE YOUR BEST ALLY!
Don't forget that in order to succeed at keeping your new habits as part of your new lifestyle, making this process smooth till it becomes natural IS THE KEY! Forcing and punishing yourself with something that you don't feel in alignment with is going to create the opposite effect, bringing back the sabotage! you don't want that, right?
Now, tell me...
